Culham Parochial Church of England Primary School was founded in 1850 to provide Church of England education for children in the Parish of Culham. In 1897 a house was built for the Headteacher, adjoining the main school building, and various small extensions were added to the school over the years. In 1997, to meet the growing demand for the high quality education provided by the school, the Diocese of Oxford gave permission for the School House to be incorporated into the main building. In January 2006 the school formed a Partnership Foundation Stage Unit with Culham Pre-school. Today the school consists of teaching areas for FS, KS1 and KS2, computer suite and, library area, staff PPA/meeting rooms and offices.

The buildings are set in pleasant grounds with both grassed and hard play areas, and a newly installed adventure/climbing play area. We also have an enclosed pond and outdoor seating areas. The FS has its own purpose-built outdoor area.

VISION STATEMENT
Our vision is for every child to become an independent learner who takes pleasure in the pursuit of knowledge, and to offer a school life that incorporates the values of the Christian faith.

MISSION STATEMENT
Our mission is to equip all our pupils for a journey of lifelong discovery by teaching them how to learn and to be secure in that learning. We aim to serve the community by providing education of the highest quality within the context of Christian beliefs and to promote Christian values through the experience it offers all its pupils.

AIMS
We aim to provide a secure and happy environment within which the children can, through richness and variety of experience:

  • develop lively and enquiring minds; question and argue rationally and apply these skills to a variety of tasks;
  • acquire knowledge and skills relevant to life in an ever changing world;
  • develop high standards of individual achievement in literacy and numeracy according to each pupil's ability;
  • learn to respect religious and moral values and to show tolerance of other races, religions and ways of life;
  • acquire an understanding of the society in which they live, the interdependence of individuals, groups, communities and nations;
  • develop a sense of responsibility towards themselves and others and form and sustain good personal relationships.

In working towards achieving these aims, parental involvement is of the greatest importance. The help and support of parents encourages the most effective learning within our school.

ADMISSIONS POLICY
A child is required to be in full-time education the term after their fifth birthday.

The School's Policy is to offer a full-time place from the September after a child's fourth birthday. Once the parent has accepted the place it is reserved for the child but a parent may defer entry within the academic year in which the place is offered. Places are reserved according to the priorities listed below and children are invited to attend some school sessions prior to entry.

Our standard admission number is eight pupils in each year.

The admission rules (2011/2012), as defined by Oxfordshire County Council for voluntary-controlled primary schools, are shown below in descending order of priority. Children who are looked after have the highest priority:

  1. Children with a Statement of Special Educational Needs that names the school in Part 4 of the Statement.
  2. Children who are looked after by a local authority within the meaning of section 22 of the Children Act 1989 at the time of their application, and who will still be looked after at the time when they are due to be admitted to the school.
  3. Disabled children who need to be admitted to a school on the grounds of physical accessibility. The definition of disability is that contained within the Disability Discrimination Act as amended.
  4. Children who live in the school's designated area. If there are more applicants than places in this category priority will be given in the following descending order:
    a) First priority in category 4 will go to those children who have brothers or sisters who will be attending the preferred school at the time of entry. However, if there are more applicants than places in category 4(a) priority will be given, within this group, to those children who live closest to the school by the nearest designated public route as defined on the Directorate for Children, Young People and Families' Geographic Information System.
    b) Second priority in category 4 will go to those children who live closest to the school by the nearest designated public route as defined on the Directorate for Children, Young People and Families' Geographic Information System.
  5. Children living outside the designated area who have a brother or sister who will be attending the preferred school at the time of entry. If there are more applicants than places in this category priority will be given within this group to children who live closest to the school by the nearest designated public route as defined on the Directorate for Children, Young People and Families' Geographic Information System.
  6. Those children who live closest to the school by the nearest designated public route as defined on the Directorate for Children, Young People and Families' Geographic Information System.
