Acting Headteacher:
I have been teaching for 10 years and prior to this post I taught and was Acting head at another local school. I was asked to come and work at Culham and liked it so much that I didn't leave! I look forward to working with you all as we move towards making Culham an outstanding school that is a beacon of high quality education in the local area.
Chair:
Staff Governor:
After working at Culham School for over nine years I am happy to be part of the Governing Body offering support and guidance to help lead the school to establish and promote the strategic framework by contributing and assisting with the achievement of our pupils, the quality of teaching and the safety of our pupils and school environment. The utmost importance for me is the future of our children and my aim is to support and help to lead the school forward and ensure that the children obtain the very best education and reach their potential in a safe and happy environment. I have two children, a daughter who attained her Masters degree last year and is now working in sports media. My son, who attended Culham School until 2010 and has just transferred to secondary school. Having worked in Culham for the past few years, it has been an incredible experience to meet and take part in various activities with the community, to which I plan to continue. As a governor I intend to continue to support Culham School and the wider community. I look forward to supporting and observing the school moving from strength to strength.
Foundation Governors:
Community Governor:
My husband and I moved to Culham in 1988. Our son, Daniel, was 3 yrs. old at the time and was a pupil at the school till he moved on to John Mason. I am more or less retired now, but my background is in Social Work and I worked for Oxford County Council for over 30 years. My husband, Christopher, died in early 2006 and I became a school governor (community) either later that year, or the following year, after I had resigned from my job to manage my husband's business. I volunteered because, at that time, the Governing body was having difficulty in filling the vacancies, I value the school and wanted to play my part.
Parent Governors:
I have been a Parent Governor since 2009 and have one son at Culham School and another who left in 2010 and who is now at secondary school. I have worked in human resources for a number of years and I am currently a Human Resources Manager in an independent school in Oxford.
I decided to become a Governor when I was 'between jobs' as I felt that my work gave me skills that would be useful to the School. I had always been actively involved with the Parents and Friends Association but working full time meant that before then I did believe that I had the time to commit to anything more. I now work part time which means that I am able to combine being a Governor with my work and family life.
I moved to Culham in 2001 with my husband, and our first child was born in 2005. He now attends the school, and our daughter now attends the Pre-school. I have been a GP Partner in a large Wantage practice for nearly 12 years, with over 40 members of staff under our employment and 12,500 patients. I am also a qualified GP Trainer (teaching other junior doctors to become GPs).
I am a fairly recent addition to the Governing Body (as a Parent Governor) and an active member of the Support Culham School (SCS) Group. I believe that my experience in communication skills will help me to bring new and alternative approaches to the administrative running of the school. I believe I can motivate change, and see myself having a role in this exciting opportunity help the school go from strength to strength.
If anyone wishes to contact me with any issues, please do so via the School office, catch me in the playground or email me at cfairley@doctors.org.uk
Associate Governors:
Why am I on the governing body? I always assumed that to be a governor you needed to know all about educational processes and have some experience in this field. My formal education finished at Sheffield University and I haven't set foot in a classroom since. About a year ago a friend of mine became a governor at a West Oxforshire school and dispelled this myth. I then realised that what a good governor needs to be is passionate about the school, its pupils, its staff, the community and be driven with a single purpose of making the school into one that is outstanding in Education and learning. I am all of those things which is why I joined the governors. At work I am a Detective with Thames Valley Police based in Abingdon. I investigate a wide variety of incidents in Oxfordshire and further afield. In my job I need good attention to detail, need to communicate with a very broad section of society and a determination to get things done. In my spare time I enjoy running and try and complete a marathon race in a different country each year. This year was Rotterdam. I am also a volunteer at my local Cub group in Clifton Hampden. With the little spare time I have I sleep!
LA Governors:
I became involved with Culham School when Michael Chatwin was Chairman of the School Governors--which goes back a few years. Michael and my husband had been on the Parish Council together and had been involved in obtaining and setting up the portacabin for the pre-school use. Always on the lookout for new governors Michael asked me if I would join up as an LEA governor. I had always been very impressed with the little I had seen of the children and of the positive impact the school had on the village so I agreed. At that stage we had a pub and after that was sold the schools support as a centre of activity for Culham became even more important.
My background isn't in teaching but in nursing and when I became a governor I was managing the Transplant Ward in Oxford and am now involved in managing one of the Transplant Programmes. What does this bring to being a school governor? Lots of support skills, management skills and what everyone who willingly gives their time voluntarily a belief in and commitment to the school
